Demons,
I have some sad news Kevin Bowden aged 51, passed away on Thursday 5/8/2010. Cause unknown at this time. Some of you will know Kevin and or his brother Peter, they both played mostly Senior-B hockey during the middle 1970`s. Kevin Bowden was a defenseman who played 43 games from 1975 to 1977. RIP Deepest sympathy to the family, from the committee and all past and present members. Demons I.H.C.

OiHan Tournament Report June 2010:
This past Queens Birthday Weekend of June 2010, the Demons Ice Hockey Club Inc. participated in the Australian National Masters Ice Hockey Tournament, this being the Inaugural Ice Hockey Tournament at the Icehouse - Docklands Victoria Australia.
With a team made up of some present day Premier C players and some who have played with the various Demon sides going back through to the 1980`s, we competed in the over 45yrs.+ Division. A number of other old Demons competed with various other teams over the weekend also, they included Jon Moses with Nite Owl 35yrs+, Nigel Chandler, Andrew Petrie and Nick Etchells with Sydney 35yrs+, Wayne Solomon White Owl 45yrs+, Allan Stevenson, Paul Jacobson and Gary Hood with Old Crocks 45yrs+, Paul Groves and Andrew Kirkham with Marauders 45yrs+, Laurie Peters with Rusty Blades QLD 55yrs+ and finally the oldest Demon of all the ageless Russell Jones in the Nite Owl 55yrs+ team. A remarkable feat to have so many players, 27 in all out of approximately 170 who played in this wonderful tournament.
The competition was a round robin of 2 games on the Friday, a quarter final on the Saturday and a semi final on the Sunday. With a 1 and 1 record on Friday we faced a tough job on Saturday to progress further. It was not to be our day with some hard luck in front of the net, plus a couple of team defensive mistakes, we were beaten in this game. Sundays’ semi final proved much the same.
With minutes to go and a tight score line we switched off to allow a couple of late goals that allowed our opposition to record a comfortable win to take the Bronze Medal post.
The social aspect of playing hockey with past and newer Demons was a highlight. The lunches and dinners plus the usual cleansing ales in and around the tournament were especially enjoyable. Although not as successful as we may have hoped for, a rousingly enjoyable weekend was had by all.
Demons 45yrs+ Team members were:
GK- Doug Dow,
Defence - Geoff Bell, Bruce McGurty, Paul Raphael, Rick Skrzelinski and Phil Strahan.
Forwards – Wayne Collier, Wayne Frankcombe, Rod Johns, Don Lord, Bryan Muir, Wayne Peters, Paul Rice, Gordon Stewart and Owen Trumper.
Results: Demons 2 Lost to Nite Owls 8
Demons 7 Defeated Adelaide Vintage Reds 0
Demons 0 Lost to Marauders 6
Demons 2 Lost to Canberra Senators 6
Our team name has now gone down in history as participating in another historical Ice Hockey moment, to go along with the first to play at Oakleigh Ice Rink, or as the first visiting team to play in Ballarat and Bendigo Ice Rinks soon after they opened. The club trip to Adelaide in 1978. Our 1981 Tasmania Road Trip, where we played games on their then three Ice Rinks in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport. The Demons have also competed in the three Australian Master Games with Ice Hockey Tournaments, these being held in Melbourne in 1995 35yrs+ a Bronze Medal, then Canberra in 1997 35yrs+ a Silver Medal and finally Newcastle in 2001 35yrs+ a Bronze Medal. This coupled with the Demons name surviving since Ice hockey restarted post war 1946 with Russell Jones in his first season, to present day, adds further to our long and proud record.
On behalf of the Demons we wish to compliment the organisers, particularly Don Reddish, Bob Blackburn, Charlie Grandy and Kevin Brown members of the old-timers organisation OiHAN, who staged a magnificent tournament at Docklands in 2010, following the 22 previous years of the June Tournament they had staged at the Bendigo Rink, before its demise in 2009. Well done!!!

Welcome to 2010:
A quick note from the phantom, after a very successful summer campaign where the Demons were represented in two grand finals by three teams. Division three saw the Devils vs the Demons with the Devils winning in overtime 4-3. Division 4 saw the Demons come from 4th position to overrun the highly fancied Jets to take out the summer competition. Well done to all participants.
The Skate day which was held last month was a huge success, thank you to all the players, families and friends who turned up for a skate. The 2010 season is fast approaching commencing the week of the 12th of April. The committee has decided to field a joint team in the premier A, as was the case last year. This decision was not made lightly; the committee is very much looking to consolidate the club and strengthen the numbers for the 2011 season. Premier reserve will again field a very strong team. At this stage no coach has been appointed, although the club is anticipating Jon Moses will play a huge role in the team’s management along with Even White. Premier C will again be managed by Bruce McGurty. A new league called Recreational C is also starting this year. This team does not require players to be drafted, it is for those that wish to play no contact and no slap shots. A team manager is yet to be formalized, but talks are well underway.
From the Presedent and the committee, welcome to all the new faces and welcome back to all existing players. Any player who has not paid the deposit for the season must do so ASAP in order to be eligable to play in the first round. For further information please contact Doug Dow on 0434 567 309.

Winter Hockey

14/01/11
Hi all,

The winter 2011 ice hockey season is fast approaching and we need to get a handle on who wants to play winter hockey with the Demons and in what level/grade. For that reason, I would like everyone receiving a copy of this message to respond to me some time in the next week and give me an indication of what you want to do. At the moment, the Docklands – Oakleigh split for each grade, and which nights teams train and play will most likely be similar to last year but the schedule has not yet been set.

If you are uncertain about whether you are intending to play (or which grade), please still respond and let us know which way you are ‘leaning’.

As for whether you ultimately play in the level/grade you request, we cannot make any absolute promises at this stage. Who plays in which level will depend heavily on the numbers that show up in April (and of course ability), but we do want to know what your preferences are.

Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.

Doug Dow

Just a reminder to all demons, there is a scrimmage organized for next Wednesday the 19th. Please be sure to bring a jersey (having more than one colour option would be handy if possible).

NEW WEBSITE!!

Hi all,
We now have a whole new website! Although it isn't very visible from just looking around, I have rebuilt the whole site (some pages havn't been finished but I'm working on it!). This means I have freedom over every aspect of the site, and also that I can implement new features to the site - like emailing updates to those that sign up.
Please email me if you find a problem with a page that I have already made as I'm sure there will be dead links and pages that have the wrong headings on them.

Josh

Hey guys,

If anyone has any photos from any of the games throughout 2010, please send them to me so I can add them to the site! [jskrzelinski@gmail.com]
